Equal Ability CIC works with companies to highlight the business benefits of providing access for disabled people. We have, for some while, been working on a project to encourage the greater availability of hoists in away from home accommodation. We are particularly concerned with mainstream hotels and guesthouses that can be used for as little as one night, and at short notice, for business or education, or perhaps to attend a social event.
We are absolutely delighted to be able to report that the Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG) has taken up our challenge to provide a site to prove the business benefits of hoists in hotels, to complement our evidence on disabled people's need for such facilities. They have arranged for not one but three of their hotels in London to have hoists installed:
After an initial 12 month trial IHG have proved there is a business case to provide rooms with hoists and they will be installing them in further hotels around the UK. Hoists are also now available at the Holiday Inn Great Barr in Birmingham and the Holiday Inn Cardiff.
Equal Ability CIC has just launched a new website dedicated to accommodation of all types that has ceiling hoists fitted. We are trying to make this a single source of information for ceiling hoist users around the world and hope that accommodation providers will see there is a business case for this reasonable adjustment.
